Socal Urology Institute's Urologist Dr. Gary Bellman has more than 20 years of experience and has earned
him the trust of thousands of patients. His surgical specialties are minimally invasive, and wherever
possible, performed as same-day outpatient procedures. He also treats common disorders such
as erectile dysfunction, kidney stones and other conditions with non-surgical treatments.
The early detection of certain types of prostate cancer is critical for successful treatment. A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen in the blood. While PSA is present in the blood of all men, elevated levels may be indicative of prostate cancer. However, this is not always the case.
PSA rises as men age, so an elevated result is not necessarily cancer, and it certainly doesn't indicate that an aggressive cancer is present.
PSA testing has its critics, who cite that elevated PSAs may cause undue worry in patients. However, it is the best preliminary test available and as such, Dr. Bellman recommends that his patients have a regular PSA test.
