Summer Months- High Risk Time For Kidney Stones
By: Dr. Gary Bellman on May 9, 2013
As the warm summer months are approaching us, it’s important to stay hydrated!
In the last decade, data shows a sharp increase in patients with kidney stones- likely tied to diets high in salt, animal protein, and refined sugars; Although the primary reason for the summertime kidney stone formations is caused by a lack of hydration.
As the mercury rises, we sweat a little more and without the proper amount of fluids to replenish our bodies, the fluids that are retained become more concentrated in dietary minerals- such as Calcium. This increases the risk that those minerals will concentrate into stones.
